Saturday dead spits...

"Imagine - Lennon would have been 70 today - and Eric Pickles had nothing to do with his death". A pungent headline if ever there was one from Charon QC, a blogger learned in the leathery redness of a glass of Rioja and the befuddlesome laws of our English neighbours. He also has a sharp eye for a likeness and a gag and has spotted the truly astonishing resemblance which unites the Conservative Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and a certain Prisoner No. 81A3860...  The post reminded me of one of my own spots. The French philosophe Denis Diderot lived from 1713 to 1784 and is best known for his moving and shaking role as chief editor of the innovative Encyclopédie. Many Scots will be familiar with Tom Nairn's quip "Scotland will be reborn the day the last minister is strangled with the last copy of the Sunday Post". This remark was an Scottifying adjustment of another ascribed to Diderot, who rather more viscerally contended that "Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest". I'm sure the incumbent First Lord of the Treasury would never dream of throttling Lizzie Windsor with Rowan William's large intestine, but to my eye, Mr David Cameron bears a startling resemblance to Monsieur Denis Diderot. In this tasteful oval depiction, we can see Call Me Dave posing in his dapper little Lord Fauntleroy suit....Mon Dieu, indeed!
